This movie is about a very introverted character (Ryan Gosling) that lives a double life. He works at a garage and is a part time stuntman in movies and in his other life he is a getaway driver. He ends up befriending a woman (Carey Mulligan) and her son (Kaden Leos) as they live in the same floor of an apartment complex. The relationship between the three start off great but they slowly become distant as the woman’s husband (Oscar Issac) is released from prison and people are coming after him as he has some unpaid debt.

The movie starts off with a high suspenseful opening sequence in which Ryan Gosling’s character is helping these two criminals get away from the cops. This scene is not really related to the major plot line but it does add some depth to the main character in regards to his criminal life. It also adds some thrill and to keep you in your seat.

However after this the first part of the movie is slow due to character introductions and building the relationships between the characters. It only really picks up till after the woman’s husband comes home after his release from prison.

The story at first glance might not seem that deep but there’s a lot of reading between the lines and analyzing the characters that is more important than the actual dialogue.

The movie isn’t excessively violent but the times it is violent it is very gruesome and gory but I can definitely understand why the director decided to make it so. In addition the music is also very well done and definitely paid homage to the 80s.

Overall this isn’t a sit back action flick, it is a deep movie with great music and suspense.

My Review

I don’t eat fish and chips often but when I do this is the place.

There price is very reasonable (e.g. approximately $11-25) and most usually order their signature fish and chip dish which I highly recommend. For the health cautious type there are healthier alternatives such as having the fish baked instead of fried and replacing the fries with salad or vegetables.

The food arrived at a reasonable time and the waitress was very polite and friendly. In discussing the environment it is definitely a family friendly place.

However like most Oakville restaurants they tend to close early compared to places in Toronto (9pm)

Overall anyone looking for a fish and chips place and willing to travel this is the one.

My Review:

I recently visited this place for dinner and for a Friday night it was packed. Luckily we got there approximately 20 minutes earlier before there was a lineup for tables.

This restaurant is an all you can eat place filled with dishes from Oriental cuisine. Instead of customers going out of their seats and going to buffet tables (e.g. Mandarin) to pick the food they want. They have a paper menu and you just check off the stuff you want with the quantity you want. It’s called a Sushi buffet for a reason as the majority of the menu consists of sushi, sashimi (fish without the rice) and a variety of rolls.

The food quality was really good and have no complaints and the arrival of food was also delivered at a reasonable time.

The only issue I did have was the waitress. She wasn’t really that friendly and I felt rushed near the end of the meal. I had ordered some other dishes and ice cream for desert. When she delivered the order she came back and asked if we wanted anything else, I said not right now. A few minutes later she gives me the cheque without me asking for it. I understand that there were people waiting but I thought that this could have been handled more politely.

Overall the food was good, customer service left a little to be desired and the price is reasonable for a dinner buffet (Approximately $25 per adult).

My Review

This is probably one of the only restaurants in Oakville that is opened 24/7 so if you’re coming home from a late night at work or coming home after a night out on the town this is probably your only option.

I’ve been here a few times and I’ve only stuck to their breakfast menu (their breakfast menu is all day). I’ve tried their different breakfast dishes and they were all pretty good (i.e. their signature “Slam” breakfast, signature breakfast sandwiches, breakfast skillet).

In terms of their service it isn’t fast but isn’t slow either. I personally believe my food was delivered at an approximate time.

In terms of the environment the few times I’ve been there it has never been packed so it is a very quiet and cozy place if you want to have a conversation with a friend or to get some work done.

Overall I can’t say much about their lunch and dinner menu as I have never tried it but if you’re looking for a good place to have breakfast where it doesn’t end at 11am in Oakville, this is the place.

My Review

The Korean Grill House is most known for their All You Can Eat barbeque. They have a few locations around the downtown Toronto area however I visited this specific location near Ryerson University.

They have their lunch price between 11:30am-3pm and then again from 10pm to close. They have their dinner price from 3pm-10pm. The dinner price has a few more items that you can choose from such as Ox Tongue, Ox Liver, Beef Ribs and Salmon. To be honest they should have offered a few more options as most people are happy with just the lunch options (Chicken, Beef, Squid, Pork, Fish Fillet).

In terms of food quality, I ate there for dinner and the Fish Fillet and Salmon easily fell apart on the grill so it was very frustrating to eat it, the other stuff was okay but it was nothing amazing. It is expected though as this is an all you can eat place and not a fine dine cuisine type restaurant.

In terms of service if I told them verbally and didn’t write it down they forgot about it, there weren’t that many people there at that time so I don’t see any excuse.

Overall it was an alright place if you’re on a budget and you want to get your money’s worth.

My Experience:

Bier Market has two locations in the downtown core, however I’m only reviewing the smaller location on King Street at this time.

This place has a small outside patio and the decor inside has an old western feel. They also have a few televisions as well as a band playing on specific nights.

There is a wide variety of alcoholic drinks at Bier Market that you won’t find anywhere else and the drinks are reasonably price for a place located in the downtown core.

You will mainly go to this place for drinks as the price of food is a bit outrageous especially since the portions they provide are very small. I strongly suggest you go somewhere else to eat and go drinking at Bier Market after.

In terms of the atmosphere, both times that I went there the place was extremely loud and to add a band to boot you might as well go to a club if you don’t want to talk. The patio is much quieter even when there is a lot of people there so that might be a better option for the conversationalist if you still want to go to Bier Market.

Overall the choices of alcoholic drinks is the main reason you go there, nothing else really stands out from the usual nightly spots in downtown Toronto.

My Experience:

This place use to be called Oasis but it closed down around early 2011, it recently re-opened again with new owners, new name and new decor.

The place was split into two sections, a cafe and the karaoke rooms.

Just like Oasis they do have Daytime happy hour from 3-8 everyday of the week approximately $15-18 a person. The happy hour comes with one free (non alcoholic) drink as well.

In terms of the customer service the people working there at that time were really nice. I had trouble working the karaoke machine and the lady was very nice in trying to help me figure it out.

Although the price and customer service was good, at the end of the day if the quality of karaoke is bad then I’m not going to go back there again.

They introduced a new system that was different then the old one, however the system was all flare and no substance.

The program had no English option which will turn off a lot of customers, the song selection was very limited for English and I heard from friends it was limited in Chinese as well.

Overall although the Karaoke places in Toronto, Markham and Richmond Hill are more expensive I rather spend the extra money for quality and only recommend this place to people due to the cheap price or lack of transportation.

My Experience:

I went with a group of friends for dinner at Woo Lounge using one of those deal sites. I had heard about the place before but never had the opportunity to check it out. The place is located on the top floor of the building, Toronto Life Square that also houses the AMC theatre.

In short it is an urban, stylized All You Can Eat buffet. The decor was very fancy, the lights were dimmed and they had Top 40, Dance music playing in the background. I personally enjoyed the atmosphere since I’m into that kind of music however for someone in the older demographic (30+) that just wants a nice dinner and have a conversation this place might not be for you.

In terms of the food, the quality wasn’t bad but the food selection is a bit limited compared to Mandarin. The one plus was they had a Dim Sum table during dinner time so that does make up for it as I am a big fan of dim sum.

Overall I enjoyed my experience, the price is reasonable (Approx. $15 for lunch, Approx. $20-25 depending on which day you go) for a place located in the downtown core, but if you are looking for a wide selection of food at an All You Can Eat buffet, you are better off sticking to Mandarin.

My Experience:

The location and the exterior might fool you and give you a bad impression but once you go in and taste the food you will soon change your mind. The diner is very small (around 10-12 tables) and was also very clean when I was there.

It is a diner so the food options are nothing out of the ordinary. They have salads, fries, sandwiches and a wide variety of burgers which is their specialty. In addition they also have an All Day Breakfast Menu which is a major plus. The price range is reasonable ranging from $10-15.

The server that was on shift at that time was very nice and considerate. He forgot to give me the glass of milk I requested for my meal however promised that it would be on the house when I came back next time.

Overall I enjoyed my meal, had a very pleasant experience and I would go back again. The only thing is that it is closed on the weekends since it is located in the industrial area which is understandable.

If you like inspirational sports movie (i.e. Last Year’s The Fighter) this movie is right up your alley.

Even if you are not a fan of MMA this movie is still a great film to watch as the MMA part of it is not the main focus of the film.

Without giving too much away this movie in short consists of two brothers who are down on their luck. One with money problems, and the other trying to make things right along with both having an estranged relationship with their father, who tries to make things right after years of destroying and tearing their family apart due to his alcoholism.

Both brothers find out about a big MMA tournament with a prize of 5 million dollars for the winner.

With a lot of problems in their lives not to mention a lot of money at stake as well, this film gives the viewer a gut wrenching emotional roller coaster from beginning to end.

The movie Contagion in short deals with a viral outbreak. The United States government and health organizations from different parts of the world are trying very hard to slow down the epidemic and produce a vaccine to battle the virus before the world falls into chaos.

If you have seen the trailer for the movie and the description you would be lead to believe that this is a drama thriller however in my opinion it is a lot slower paced then I had hoped.

I was sitting throughout the first quarter of the movie waiting for the action to pick up and when I thought it did it slowly died back down to a lot of dialogue.

This movie is for the educated and the attentive as you have to pay attention to a lot of the dialogue or you will get lost in the story.

With an all star cast I was expecting a lot more.
